Homeopathic Remedies for Your Dog

Homeopathic remedies for your dog refers to alternative medicine where natural substances stimulate the body’s natural healing process. Developed in the 1700s by physician Samuel Hahnemann, homeopathic is based on the principle that like cures like’. This means a substance capable of causing particular symptoms in a healthy individual will cure similar symptoms in a person with disease.

Homeopathic products for pets usually contain materials from plants, animals, and minerals and are highly diluted. The idea is to help your pet heal itself. These products are readily available in popular pharmacies and supermarkets and provide relief from bee stings to indigestion, anxiety, respiratory issues, and more.

In homeopathy, symptoms are important tools, both for determining which remedy is needed in the case, and for monitoring the healing process.

The FDA tells us there are currently no FDA-approved products labeled as homeopathic, therefore their safety and effectiveness are not regulated. Why do so many pet parents choose the homeopathic route then? It’s usually the same reason humans choose a more natural health path than traditional medicine.

Homeopathic remedies are an alternative solution for pets and pet owners who want a more natural way of raising their dogs. Instead of medicines and vaccinations created in a lab, homeopathy uses the body’s natural immune system to keep pets healthy. Many use this alternative form of medicine to treat both acute and chronic conditions. Cool, right?

There are specific veterinary practices that specialize in homeopathic remedies instead of the typical health journey a regular veterinarian might offer. There are also those doctors who practice both.

If you look at your own choices for healing, you may get a flu shot every year, however, use the homeopathic herb arnica to reduce inflammation and swelling. You may feed your dog kibble, however, add in a scoop of organic canned pumpkin to help with indigestion and diarrhea. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends adding a small amount of this nutrient-rich and  immune-boosting protein to help smooth the transition between different types of food.

It makes perfect sense to incorporate homeopathic remedies into your dog’s life. Natural, however, doesn’t mean without risk. There’s important information you need to arm yourself with to use homeopathic remedies correctly and to keep your pet healthy and flourishing.

The Rules of Homeopathic Remedies:

While it’s easy to get homeopathic remedies, it’s also easy to make mistakes. It’s essential to do your research, talk to your vet, and understand what a homeopathic lifestyle means for you and your pet. You would never want to harm your pooch so following these rules will help guide you in the right direction and safely treat your dog.

  • Give homeopathic remedies at least 20 minutes before you feed your dog so it has an empty stomach.
  • Don’t touch your dog’s remedies as you may contaminate them.
  • You may see immediate relief of symptoms or they can get worse before they get better.
  • Don’t store your remedies in direct sunlight or extreme heat or cold.
  • Don’t store remedies near mobile phones, televisions, microwave ovens or computers.

What Do Homeopathic Remedies Look Like?

You can find homeopathic remedies in several different forms:

  • Tablets
    • For some pet owners, it’s as easy as opening up their dog’s mouth and placing the pill in the back of their tongue.
    • If your dog rejects the tablet, you may need to gently hold its mouth shut while lightly blowing, which will trigger it to swallow.
    • For others, it’s putting a pill in a treat and tricking the dog.
  • Pellets
    • These are very small and depending on the amount needed, your dog may swallow or they will dissolve before it gets fussy.
    • You can also put these small round white pellets in peanut butter or treats.
  • Liquid

It’s normal to have questions. If your veterinarian is supportive of a homeopathic approach, talk about the best methods for giving your pet these amazing remedies. If not, perhaps search for a doctor who’s more in line with your beliefs. There are also several groups on social media to support you through your homeopathic  journey as well.
